Five-minute guide

What MERV rating should I use?

Short answer: use the highest efficiency your equipment and duct system can handle without creating an airflow problem.

Start with the existing system

Confirm the exact filter dimensions, the equipment manufacturer’s guidance, and the filter-rack design. A filter that physically fits is not automatically the right restriction for the system.

Watch condition, not only the calendar

Pets, remodeling, wildfire smoke, fan runtime, and household activity can load a filter faster. Check it regularly and replace it when loading is visible or airflow guidance calls for it.

When a room purifier makes more sense

If the whole-home filter is correct but one occupied room still has a particle concern, a properly sized portable purifier can target that room without increasing resistance in the HVAC system.
